STRINGERS TREADS AND RISERS
When
manufacturing stair treads, rises and stringers reference
must be made to local governing codes prior to design of
the tread depth and riser height. A tread of 10" and
a rise of 7" to 7 1/2" are considered normal or
average. Stair treads for what is considered to be a more
comfortable flight of stairs are 10 1/2" to 11"
with riser less than 7". A common calculation can be
made by adding two riser dimensions to one tread and that
proportion should not be less than 24 or more than 26.
Stringers
can be manufactured from fabricated steel plate to allow
for more variables and options in the assembly and
installation. Steel channels are also used they are
commonly rolled steel in 10" and 12" depths.
10" stringers are recommended for standard or common
installations. 12" channels are used where required
by architech design or where heaviers loads may be
encountered. Box type stringers can be constructed from
with rectangular steel tubing but this type of
installation is not very common.
